Treble Clef District 70 parents and fourth graders are invited to attend beginning band and orchestra orientations on Sept. 2 at Highland Middle School.
The beginning Orchestra Orientation will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 in the south gym at Highland Middle School. This session will introduce parents and students to the orchestral instruments available for beginners and provide an overview of the district's orchestra program.
The beginning Band Orientation will follow from 7:30 to 8 p.m. in the north gym of Highland Middle School. This session will introduce parents to the band instruments available for beginners and provide an overview of the District 70 band program.
Parents and students are invited to attend one or both meetings, depending on the students' interest.

The Current Need for Substitutes 7-17-2014

District 70 is now accepting applications for substitute work for the 2014-2015 school year.

In order to be considered "qualified" an applicant needs to have teaching experience, or a teaching degree to include student-teaching experiences. Until further notice, applicants without these qualifications will not be contacted for an interview.

New Assessments Set For Students This School Year

District 70 Libertyville District 70 students will take new assessments in the 2014-15 school year.

STAR Enterprise Assessments will be administered to kindergarteners through eighth-graders and will replace IOWA assessments, while PARCC will be administered to third- through eighth-graders and replace ISAT testing. This change will help 1) assess student understanding of the new Illinois Learning Standards for math and language arts, 2) help monitor student growth, 3) provide information to guide instruction, 4) evaluate curriculum effectiveness, and 5) provide opportunities for students to have more experience with online testing.

Meet New Art Teacher Kathryn Bernard

She teaches art at Oak Grove schools, and also will teach four Thursday morning classes at Adler Park School. Alicia Sather will continue to teacher all the other art classes at Adler Park and Butterfield schools. Cindi Sartain continues to teacher art at Copeland Manor and Rockland schools.

Bernard was hired through a working shared service agreement between District 70 and District 68.

Welcome Nichole Vipond

News Photo Please give a warm welcome to Copeland Manor first grade teacher Nichole Vipond. Nichole is expected to be officially hired by the Board of Education during an Aug. 25 meeting.

Nichole has been a third grade classroom bilingual/monolingual teacher in Waukegan for the last three years. She also was a third grade teacher in Kenosha, Wis.

Nichole has a bachelor's degree from Carthage College, where she graduated magna cum laude.

Welcome Stephanie Meo

News Photo Please give a warm welcome to Copeland Manor first grade teacher Stephanie Meo. Stephanie is expected to be officially hired by the Board of Education during an Aug. 25 meeting.

Stephanie was a paraeducator and long-term substitute teacher at Copeland Manor last year. She also was a summer school teacher in Mundelein. She has volunteered for the Special Olympics.

Stephanie has a bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University.

Meet Tracy Aleckson

News Photo Please give a warm welcome to D70's new hearing impaired teacher Tracy Aleckson. She will travel between schools to work with hearing impaired students.

Tracy has worked for SEDOL for the last 16 years as a hearing impaired itinerant teacher. Before that, she was a sign language interpreter for SEDOL.

She has a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University.

District 70 New residents planning on attending District 70 schools in the fall can pick up registration packets at the Educational Research Center. The ERC is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Please complete the packets and then drop by our offices to talk with Alisa Gilbert to complete the process. Her phone number is 847-362-9695, ex: 7112. The ERC is located at 1381 W. Lake St., across from Butterfield School.

Welcome Jennifer Croner

News Photo Please give a warm welcome to new Highland Middle School spanish teacher Jennifer Croner.

Jennifer recently received a master's degree from St. Ambrose University. She has a bachelor degree from Augustana College, and spent a summer at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

For the last seven years, Jennifer has been teaching spanish at Geneseo High School. There she worked with students in a leadership team, guided student trips abroad and coached girls volleyball.

Shatter-Proof Door Glass, Windows Added To Schools

News Photo District 70 is coating doors and front widow glass with shatter-resistant film and installing video cameras to school entrances as part of a state safety grant.
An Illinois School and Campus Safety Grant of almost $60,000 is paying for the work. The grant is being issued by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. The grants were created on the heels of the mass shooting of students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., in 2012. District 70 is one of 448 schools being awarded grant monies.

Champions' Program Offerings in the Fall 2014-15

Champions Champions will once again offer before- and after-school programing at all of our elementary schools for the 2014-15 school year.

New this year will be a preschool program for 3-5 year olds at Butterfield School. More information is located on our Virtual Backpack flier page on this D70 website, listed under HOME.

Welcome Nora Beckman!

News Photo Please join us in giving a warm welcome to new Copeland Manor School nurse Nora Beckman.

Nora is working on a master's degree as a family nurse practitioner with the University of Illinois Chicago and has a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Maryland.

She has worked in an intensive care unit, cardiotheoracic intensive care unit, as well as been a critical care nurse educator. She also is fluent in Spanish.

Meet Sara Snider

News Photo A warm welcome to new Copeland Manor fourth grade teacher Sara Snider.
Sara is a recent Summa Cum Laude graduate of Loyola University in Chicago.
She was a teaching intern at Hayt Elementary School in Chicago for a year and led guided reading groups at Middleton Elementary School in Skokie.
The former Minnesota resident has received numerous awards, including the 2014 Elementary Education Award from Loyola University.
