Enrollment Dips Slightly - Superintendent's

Sixth day enrollment figures for Libertyville Elementary District 70 showed a slight 1.1 percent drop from last year's sixth day numbers. "From last year's sixth day enrollment figures, we're down 30 students," said Superintendent Dr. Mark R. Friedman. Enrollment for District 70 reached 2,619 students on Sept. 5, compared to 2,649 students a year ago. The decrease in students can be seen throughout the district in four of the five schools. The largest decrease came at Highland Middle School, which dropped 20 students in a sixth day enrollment of 925 compared to 945 a year ago. Rockland also saw a slight drop in numbers going to 374 students compared to 380 a year ago. Butterfield also dropped a few students for an enrollment of 641 compared to 645 a year ago. Adler Park also decreased to 272 students compared to 276 students a year ago. Copeland Manor actually saw an increase in students, going to 397 students compared to 389 students a year ago.

Character Counts! Kicks Off Sept. 8 - Superintendent's

District 70 will embrace the popular national character-building program Character Counts! for the 2008-09 school year. The theme for the year at all the elementary schools will be "Got Character," a play on the commercial success of the Got Milk campaign. Each school will promote the theme during special Character Counts! days throughout the school year. Character Counts! is a national character-building program that teaches students about the Six Pillars: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. The program will kick-off the week of Sept. 8 with students doing a different activity every day that week.

As students begin the new school year, they will notice a few changes in District 70. Those changes include: Seventeen new staff members;
More than 600 new Apple computers to replace outdated 4-year-old models, new software, including Microsoft Office 2008, and the Internet network is stronger and faster;
Updated Everyday Math program with students using CDs at home instead of textbooks;
A new front entrance, energy conservation windows, and offices for Adler Park School; and rebuilt parking lots at Adler, Copeland Manor and Highland Middle schools.

Dr. Friedman Named Superintendent of the Year - Superintendent's

For the second time, District 70 Superintendent Dr. Mark R. Friedman has been named "Superintendent of the Year of Lake County." Friedman's peers honored him with the prestigious award during a recent Lake County Superintendents Association meeting. The award was presented to Friedman for his "outstanding leadership to education in Lake County" for the 2007-08 school year. This is the second time Friedman has won the award, first being honored in 2003-04. It is the first time in the group's history that a superintendent has been honored with the award twice.

Adler Park School will be undergoing renovations starting on June 10 and lasting until the start of school. Parking lot work will be conducted at Adler Park School, Copeland Manor School and Highland Middle School.

The District 70 website has a new look, a new navigational scheme, and a new organization that should make it faster and easier to find information! The school sites are being updated as well and have the same navigational system. This unification of design and features should make it easy for all of our users to easily navigate each of the various sites. District Website Features: *The "Directions" page now includes a new Google Map showing approximate school attendance boundaries AND includes a link to generate specific directions to the ERC *You can now subscribe to Announcements with your favorite RSS reader *The Board of Education now has the ability to post audio/video Podcasts NOTE: IF you have subscribed to a calendar under the old site you will need to re-subscribe to the calendar on the new site. A BIG thank you to Art Hughes for his hard work in creating the new sites.

CYBER SAFETY Parent Workshop: The multi-district Cyber Safety program held on April 10 was well attended by hundreds of parents. Art Wolinsky, Educational Technology Director of WireSafety.org, and Vernon Hills Officer Jim Koch, provided entertaining and informative programs. The Special Education Department is currently engaged in an internal review. One componenet of the process is assessing our work with parents and students who receive their special education services in District 70 schools. BOE Approves Technology Purchase - Technology

The Board of Education recently approved a request to purchase new desktop computers (to replace the 4 year old models we currently have), additional servers, and new operating system software for servers and clients. These purchases will help provide a technology rich learning environment for our students.

Gifted Education Design - Curriculum

Fourth and fifth grade students meeting requirements for gifted education next school year will attend Adler Park School for advanced classes in math, language arts and reading, and learn with their grade-level peers for science and social studies. Improvements to the gifted program, which is directed to the top 5 percent of the student body, were approved by the Board of Education in February. Third-graders who require addtitional differentiation throughout the year will be able to work with a gifted teacher at their school. The middle school gifted program will continue as is, with gifted courses in language arts/literature and mathematics at sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

21st Century Learning is much more than just using technology, although that is one important component. We are currently working with four additional Applications of Learning as part of our 21st Century initiative. These include Communicating, Working on Teams, Solving Problems, and Making Connections. All schools are working on these initiatives building-wide.

August 2008 The start of the school year is just around the corner! Teachers and administrators have been busy all summer preparing for an exciting new year. Committees met to work on reading/language arts, Response to Intervention, Study Skills, differentiatied mathematics, and all the new technology we are fortunate enough to have. In our continued efforts to be more environmentally resonsible, our Parent/Student Handbooks will be online later this month and for the first time include information for both the elementary and middle school. Parents are welcome to request a "hard" or paper copy from their school office as well, if needed. We look forward to hearing from you. PowerSchool - Technology

The District has adopted a Student Information System called PowerSchool. This program gives us a centralized student database which helps us manage the vast amount of data we need to provide for NCLB and to the State of Illinois.
