Libertyville Elementary District 70 will discuss plans for the provision of special education services to students with disabilities who attend private and home schools within the district boundaries for the 2013-14 school year at 4 p.m. on May 28 at the Educational Resource Center, 1381 W. Lake St., Libertyville. The meeting is for administrators and teachers in private schools and parents of students in private and home schools. Monies for Moore - The Moore We Can Offer, The Better

District 70 will be collecting money to help the victims of the tornado that hit Moore, Ok., earlier this week. The fundraiser is called "Monies for Moore - The Moore We Can Offer, The Better!" Collection cans will be set out in each school office by the district's Character Counts Committee. Monies collected may be earmarked for the American Red Cross in Oklahoma City to help with recovery. "The devastation and impact on Oklahoma and the Plaza Towers Elementary School hit hard and is painful to comprehend," said Supt. Dr. Guy Schumacher. "Anything we can gather in these short days before school is out will be beneficial, I am certain."

Three Copeland Teachers To Retire

Jan Wagner, Jill Leffelman and Donna Brannstrom are preparing to retire this spring and bid farewell to Copeland Manor School. <p>The three turned the tables on tradition recently when they hosted a luncheon for their coworkers to say thank you for all the wonderful years they spent together.

Judge Fusz Talks About the Law to HMS Students

Lake County Circuit Court Associate Judge Michael J. Fusz, currently assigned to the law division, spoke to Highland Middle School students on May 7 to explain how the legal system works. The Hon. Fusz currently works on civil cases when assigned.

New Board Members Take Office

During a special board meeting on May 6, Board of Education President Maryann Ovassapian swore in four members to the District 70 Board. Taking the oath for the first time were Wendy Schilling and Luke Stowe, while voters returned incumbents Julie Damenti and Tom Vickers to elected service.

Copeland Manor Staff Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

For many years, Maria Jimenez has been making a homemade Cinco de Mayo meal for the Copeland Manor School staff. Staff actually buys into the meal. This year, more than $600 generated from the delicious lunch will be donated to the American Cancer Society. <p> For all you do, Maria, thank you!

Institute Day Has Staff in School Learning

Last Day of School is June 4

The last day of school for the 2012-13 school year will be June 4. <p>Full-day kindergartners through fifth-graders will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Half-day kindergartners' last day will be June 3. <p> Highland Middle School students, grades 6-8, will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m.

Benny the Bull Visits Copeland Manor School

Benny the Bull, the mascot from the Chicago Bulls basketball team, visited with some of the younger Copeland Manor students on Tuesday to talk about how to stay healthy by washing hands during the day. Benny taught students that germs are alive, so you should sneeze into your elbows not your hands to prevent spreading germs. Students also were reminded to use soap when they wash their hands right after school and that they should wash all the way through singing the Happy Birthday song to themselves. Students were awarded prizes for their participation in the special assembly, which was sponsored by Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Students have a Shot at being Published

Calling all young writers and poets in grades fourth through eighth! You have until April 8 to enter your original story or poem in the Cook Memorial Library's 7th annual student writing contest. The winner of the Cook Memorial Library's student writing contest for grades 4-8 will have their story or poem published in the literary magazine. Submit your best creative writing piece, no longer than 3,000 words. One entry per author, and one author per entry only. Enter on-line by 9 p.m. April 8. If your school is participating, submit your entry to your school by April 8. Submissions will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize—publication in the library's literary magazine and an invitation to an exclusive signing party. Winners will be announced May 3. Entry forms are available at any of the Cook Memorial Public Library District facilities, on the library's website, and at participating schools. School is Canceled - March 5th, 2013

In anticipation of the major snowstorm headed our way, we will be closing ALL SCHOOLS on Tuesday, March 5. School closings affect Adler, Butterfield, Copeland, Highland and Rockland schools. Champions, before and after school program, will also be closed and there will be NO after school activities tomorrow. Thank you.

Safety and Security Updates

As we continue to address safety and security at Copeland Manor School, there will be significant changes taking place in the upcoming weeks. After a formal review of practices and procedures associated with current plans, safety officials and school security experts have assisted the District 70 administration in designing features that will support our commitment for safer and more secure access into all schools. 1. Changes that will be implemented in the near future at Copeland during the first "phase" of our ongoing efforts to ensure student and staff safety include: * A security system will be incorporated into the entry vestibule requiring all visitors to press a button in order to gain access into the school office. * Visitors will, as always, be required to sign in at the office. * Any student arriving after the school bell must be "buzzed" into the locked building with a parent or guardian, and they must sign in at the office. 2. A second "phase" of security modifications are scheduled to occur later this school year and during the summer: * Visitors also will be required to submit a Driver's License or other state issued ID to be scanned that will provide a national background check for sex offenders, restraining orders, or any custom-designed alerts. The system, used throughout thousands of schools across the country is called Raptor. * When a visitor is cleared, the system prints a badge featuring the visitor's name, photo, date, time and destination. If a potential threat is identified, the Raptor system sends instant alerts to designated officials, including law enforcement and school administrators. * Supervisors will monitor student entrance doors each morning. * In addition, all staff swipe card entry systems will be improved, and interior keys and locks will be upgraded. Security camera installation and instant emergency alerts linked to the local police department also will be considered at Copeland.

After School Activities are Canceled - February 26th, 2013

Due to severe weather, ALL after school activities are canceled today at all D70 schools. This also includes the Common Core meeting for parents tonight. The Common Core meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday March 7. The Champions after school programs will remain OPEN for their regular hours today.

Changes in ISAT Cut Scores

In anticipation of a new testing <a href="http://www.d70schools.org/lib/redirect.php?res_id=908">framework</a> in 2014-2015, the Illinois State Board of Education is recalculating the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) performance expectations for reading and mathematics. Higher performance expectations will likely result in a downward shift of where our students rank in meeting and/or exceeding state standards on the tests. This is not an indication that our students know less or are less academically capable or prepared, but that they are being measured against more rigorous standards.

Standards Based Conference

D70 Director of Curriculum Kathy Dinger and Copeland Manor Principal Erik Youngman were recently part of a panel speaking to school superintendents, principals, curriculum directors, and teachers about implementing standards-based report cards. With D70 help, school officials gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to implement such a system. D70 already has standards based grading and report cards. Principal Youngman is pictured here during the conference.

D70 Schools Receive Academic Excellence Award

For the fourth consecutive year, Adler Park, Butterfield, Copeland Manor, and Rockland schools are being honored with the highest academic award given by the Illinois State Board of Education for providing students with a high quality education. The four elementary schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70 received the highest award, an "Academic Excellence Award." They were included with only 454 schools in the state to receive the award. In order to qualify for the award, those 454 schools showed they could sustain high student performance over at least three years. The award was given to schools where at least 90% of students met or exceeded state standards in 2010-2012. This is the fourth year in a row these schools have won the award.

Libertyville Police Chief Clint Herdegen collaborated with the administrators and the D70 Emergency Management Committee to support and guide plans that enhance and address the safety of children and staff. Calendar for the 2013-14 School Year

During the Nov. 26 Board of Education meeting, board members approved the school calendar for the 2013-14 school year. The first day of school for students will be Aug. 21, 2013. Winter Break will take run from Dec. 23, 2013 through Jan. 3, 2014. Spring Break will run from March 24 through March 28, 2014. The Board of Education will determine the calendar for the 2013-14 school year in April.

The School Report Card

The School Report Card is used as a tool to inform the community about public schools in Illinois and contains information pertaining to school enrollment, average class size, time dedicated to subject area, teacher experience, school finances, and student performance. District 70 school report cards are available within the Curriculum Department on our district website at www.d70schools.org. Copies may also be requested from your school office.
