AI in Our Schools
A Guide for the Libertyville D70 Community
Learning Together
In Libertyville District 70, we recognize that the evolution of technology impacts education. AI is a tool, not a replacement for human interaction or critical thinking. It is a resource to assist learning, but it will never replace the essential skills provided by our teachers.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Overview
AI is a non-human, algorithm-based software that functions on probability. It is a predictive tool prone to biases and "hallucinations" (errors). AI, used for supporting learning, acts as a bridge between your original thoughts and ideas and high-level thinking. It is a tool for understanding, evaluating, and creating, not a replacement for your voice or relationships with others.
Protecting Student Privacy
District 70 takes your child’s digital footprint seriously. We use AI tools that meet strict privacy laws such as COPPA and SOPPA.
- No Personal Data: Under no circumstances should PII, student photos, confidential district data, or proprietary curriculum materials be entered into public AI models (e.g., open-source chatbots, image generators).
- Safe Tools Only: Use only AI tools that have been officially vetted and approved by the D70 Tech Department.
- Feedback: Remove all identifying student information before using any feedback tool.
District 70 Usage
- Use AI with integrity: Employ AI to ethically enhance work, not replace it.
- Procedure: There is a difference between using AI as a support and plagiarism. Users must cite AI's contribution and use it in accordance with district standards.
- Discipline: Teachers and administrators will follow the student handbook protocol for academic dishonesty when parameters have not been followed.
- Demonstrate transparency: Acknowledge output enhanced with AI.
- Verify for accuracy: Check AI-generated content for errors (hallucinations) or bias.
Classroom Implementation
Communication will be provided on which Degree of Assistance is allowed:
- 🔴 Red Light (No AI tools are permitted): The goal of this task is to see what the students can do entirely on their own.
- 🟡 Yellow Light (AI as a support): Students can use AI for "sparking" ideas, such as brainstorming a list of topics or explaining a difficult concept in simpler terms. AI should not write or create any part of the final product.
- 🟢 Green Light (AI as a tool): Students can use AI, provided they cite and explain how it is used.
