Staff AI Guidelines

This document provides a framework for how we approach Generative AI as staff in District 70.

1. Professional Responsibility

AI is a tool, but you are the expert as the leader of your learning environment. Your role is to:

  • Use AI with integrity: Employ AI to ethically enhance work, not replace it. (i.e., newsletter, report card comments, student feedback, evaluation, planning, report writing, but may not be used for special education paperwork)
  • Model transparency: Show your students how you can use AI output to enhance learning opportunities.
  • Verify for accuracy: Check AI-generated content for errors (hallucinations) or bias.

2. Classroom Implementation

Clearly tell your students which Degree of Assistance is allowed:

  • 🔴 Red Light (No AI tools are permitted): The goal of this task is to see what the students can do entirely on their own.
  • 🟡 Yellow Light (AI as a support): Students can use AI for "sparking" ideas, such as brainstorming a list of topics or explaining a difficult concept in simpler terms. AI should not write any part of the final product.
  • 🟢 Green Light (AI as a tool): Students can use AI, provided they cite and explain how they use AI.

3. Protecting Student Privacy

We must protect our students' privacy (Personally Identifiable Information) at all times.

  • No Personal Data: Under no circumstances should student PII, student photos, confidential district data, or proprietary curriculum materials be entered into public AI models (e.g., open-source chatbots, image generators)
  • Safe Tools: Staff are required to use only AI tools that are vetted by the District.
  • Feedback: Staff must remove all identifying student information before using any feedback tool.

4. Managing Student Integrity

When the student has not followed the degree of implementation parameters, refer to the assistance guidelines to address the infraction with the student.

  • Procedure: Teachers should follow the student handbook protocol for academic dishonesty (contact the parent/guardian and write a referral).
  • Discipline: Administration will handle necessary disciplinary action.
