Student AI Guidelines

This document provides a framework for how we approach Generative AI as students in District 70.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Overview

AI is a non-human, algorithm-based software that functions on probability. It is a predictive tool prone to biases and "hallucinations" (errors). AI, used for supporting learning, acts as a bridge between your original thoughts and ideas and high-level thinking. It is a tool for understanding, evaluating, and creating, not a replacement for your voice or relationships with others.

1. Student Responsibility

AI is a tool, not a replacement for your learning.  When appropriate and allowed, your responsibility is to:

  • Use AI with integrity: Employ AI to ethically enhance your work, not replace it.
  • Model transparency: Cite how AI was used in your work
  • Verify for accuracy: Check AI-generated content for errors (hallucinations) or bias.

2. Within the Classroom

Check with your teacher as to which Degree of Assistance is allowed:

  • 🔴 Red Light (No AI tools are permitted): The goal of this task is to see what you can do entirely on your own.
  • 🟡 Yellow Light (AI as a support): You can use AI for "sparking" ideas, such as brainstorming a list of topics or explaining a difficult concept in simpler terms. AI should not write or create any part of the final product.
  • 🟢 Green Light (AI as a tool): You can use AI, provided you cite and explain how it is used.

3. Protecting Privacy

You must protect your privacy as well as the privacy of others (Personally Identifiable Information) at all times.

  • No Personal Data: Under no circumstances should PII, student photos, confidential district data, or proprietary curriculum materials be entered into public AI models (e.g., open-source chatbots, image generators)
  • Safe Tools Only: You may use only AI tools that have been officially vetted and approved by the D70 Tech Department.
