September Paw Prints - 9-28-2020
Last Monday evening, the Board of Education heard from the Superintendent’s Reopening Advisory Committee and a plan was laid out for our elementary students to return to school in a hybrid model. Dr. Barbini emailed the community on Friday with an update. Please take note of these dates as we phase in our elementary hybrid model:
October 26th – Kindergarten and First Grade
For families who are not comfortable sending their child(ren) back to school, a remote option will be available. Dr. Barbini will be sharing a plan for the hybrid model after meeting again with the advisory teams this coming week.
Picture Day -- September 29th
District 70 is very happy to return to using HR Imaging for school photographs.
Save the Date: Copeland Picture Day is TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH
Copeland Manor is excited to schedule an alternative Picture Day for the 2020-21 school year. Students are invited to come to Copeland on Tuesday, September 29th to sit for a school picture. In order to do this safely (and quickly), 30-minute sessions have been scheduled to limit the number of students here at one time. Three different sites will be utilized for pictures. Composite pictures will be put together (individual pictures grouped) rather than class or group photos this year. All safety guidelines will be followed (masks, 6-foot separations, symptom checks, thorough cleaning, etc.) to which we are now accustomed.
Parents/drivers should pull up in the circle drive. Students will exit the car and go to his/her grade level door.
Kindergarten and 1st Graders go through the front door
2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders go to the cafeteria
Please arrive during your scheduled 30-minute time slot. Parents/drivers are asked to stay in their cars. We expect this to be a quick adventure. Here is the schedule for last names of families:
8:30 - 9:00: Last names A-B
9:00 - 9:30: Last names C-E
9:30 - 10:00: Last names F-G

Fall Conferences -- October 21 and 22
Parent-teacher conferences take place twice each year -- once in October and once in February. The October conferences will be held October 17th from 5:15 – 8:15 and 18th from 3:15 – 8:15. Conferences are scheduled in 15-minute time slots with homeroom teachers only. If you would like to meet with a teacher other than your child’s homeroom teacher, please contact him/her directly. At this time, we are planning on virtual conferences. In this case, the classroom teacher will send parents an invitation to the conference once they are all scheduled.

A note from Mrs. Morden, GTE Teacher
Gifted, Talented and Enrichment
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with so many children in District 70 through enrichment and gifted services this year! As every child is unique and special, District 70's Gifted, Talented, and Enrichment (GTE) program is designed to focus on the varying levels of needs of our students. As GTE teachers, we are able to service and enrich students at different ability levels, for divergent interest areas, and across curricular areas.
Enrichment services for 1st through 5th grade include mathematics and reading. Groups are formed based on collected data. In math enrichment, we will pull out small groups of students who have demonstrated a need to extend their thinking. The activities are aligned with our mathematics program and the Common Core Standards, and are meant to challenge children beyond grade-level expectations. Math groups change with each unit and are responsive to student needs. Reading enrichment sessions will also begin for students in grades 1-5 who demonstrate a need for enrichment beyond grade-level. As flexibility is important and best practice, we look at the data throughout the year and reassess the groups.

Social Emotional Recommendation from Mrs. Travelstead
From Mrs. Travelstead, Copeland School Social Worker:
Special Gifts Theater in 2020-2021
Libertyville School District 70 has been proud to partner with Special Gifts Theatre in the past as a way to provide a positive experience for students with special needs and increase empathy through a mentorship program.
This year's Special Gifts Theatre's annual 5k fundraiser is both virtual and adaptable....meaning you can participate on your schedule with an activity that suits you! Run, walk, dance, swim, golf, hike, hop, skip, swing, bike, paddle, sail, roll, scoot - you can even hula hoop if you choose!
Although this ongoing pandemic impacts all of us, SGT has found a way to look in a different direction to raise funds--yet keep our annual tradition to host a 5k.
Luckily, our "super-powers" are adaptability and creativity!
And remember, your generosity helps to foster self-confidence, social and language skills, both on and off the stage, for all of our SGT students who have disabilities!
Will you support SGT by signing up today to be a fundraiser for this year's SGT Virtual 5k.....Your Way?
When: October 1-18, 2020
