Supt. Letter on Florida School Shooting
Guy Schumacher

Dear Families and D70 Staff:

In light of the tragic shootings that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14, I share with you our commitment to the safety of the children and our staff.

With safety procedures and a crisis plan in place, we continue to encourage vigilance when it comes to securing all access doors, monitoring student release, and requiring visitor check in at all school offices.

While stories of this nature are incomprehensible and the connection to schools and the educational system bring the horror so deeply into the light, we share with you our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our Libertyville learning community.

Our thoughts are with the families throughout Parkland, Florida, during this shockingly sad and extraordinarily complex time.

Guy Schumacher
Superintendent of Schools

Fees Increase to Cover Technology
District 70

Student textbook and technology fees for the 2018-2019 school year will increase to help pay for updated infrastructure, new software, and technology devices.

Fees for the upcoming school year, including textbook rental fees, technology fees, and supply costs, will be $125 for students in kindergarten through fifth-grade and eighth grade, while sixth- and seventh-graders will pay $225 to help cover the costs of one-to-one Chromebooks.

“We’ve worked hard to keep costs low as we consider the bottom line for our stakeholders,” Supt. Dr. Guy Schumacher said during a Monday night meeting before the Board of Education approved the increase. “Now we need to increase the fees just to try to keep up. Technology changes, we need to update the infrastructure, buy new devices so that our students can take their assessments online. Without charging for extracurricular activities, including athletic participation (or music), our fees are still inline when compared to neighboring school districts.”
