What is Scott's Law?
625 ILCS 5/11-907(c)

Scott's Law was named after Lieutenant Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while assisting at a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Scott's Law mandates that upon approaching any stationary vehicle with flashing emergency lights, including commercial truck and cars, all approaching vehicles shall:
  • reduce speed
  • change lanes if possible; and
  • proceed with caution.
If it's flashing, move over!

Moreover - slow down for stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles. It's the law.
